Through a great deal of energy and vision, they quickly built up the club’s membership. Karl was known for his promotional ability. The yearly open house generated a great deal of press coverage. Unfortunately, Karl lacked the customer service skills to keep members. According to the book Au Naturel: The History of Nudism in Canada, Ruehle was regarded as “autocratic and tight-fisted.’”

Federation of Canadian Naturist staff repeatedly tried to contact Mr. Ruehle by phone, mail and in person to get his side of the story. Unfortunately, there was no response. The pictures below were taken on two personal attempts to contact him. (May 10, 2006 and June 15, 2006)

It was subsequently learned that Karl Ruehle passed away in August 2006 after a lengthy stay in the hospital. He had had a stroke in the early part of the year which he did not recover from. This is probably the reason that the FCN never received any response.

Walking the property was eerie. It seemed like naturists just walked away and abandoned the place as it was. It was like wandering through a post-apocalyptic science-fiction movie . Over 1,000 visitors signed affidavits that “at no time and in no way will we object to—or feel offended by—the nudity and activities of the people whom we see or meet.” Many were not only not offended, but joined in nude activities, and nearly 100 joined the club. There was full media coverage from Toronto and Buffalo newspapers and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The event confirmed Sun Valley as “the largest and certainly the most progressive club in all of Canada.” It also split the club apart.

By 1959 Sun Valley Gardens was “not well known for the democratic spirit of its leaders.” Members and visitors alike regarded Ruehle as autocratic and tight-fisted. He objected when people moved camp furniture, even if only to place a chair or picnic table in the shade. He interrupted games and competitions if they lasted longer than his schedule allowed. He closely monitored new couples in their tents. Many saw him as a “boot stomping Prussian.”

For years members had been leaving Sun Valley to form new clubs. London Sun Club, Sunshine Ranch, Sunny Glades, Sunny Acres, Ponderosa, and Lilly Valley all had their origin in SVG alumni. In most cases Karl wished them well, and stayed in touch. Only one effort did he thwart, an attempt by a former member to set up a rival camp virtually across the street. But the farmer whose land was up for lease, and who knew Karl well, reneged on the deal after Ruehle spoke with him.

In later years Ruehle moderated his policy and his behavior in response to the continuing defection of Canadians to new clubs in Ontario and the emergence of nudist clubs in New York State—home to half of his members—once that state relaxed its anti-nudity laws. In fact Ruehle, who started out advocating European-style naturism over American-style nudity, soon settled into a “very mellow” practice of nudism. By the 1970s Sun Valley Gardens admitted singles as well as couples regardless of whether they were divorced, separated, or married with a reluctant spouse. Body contact and even sex were permitted, if not encouraged. Moreover, Sun Valley offered a health club with communal bathing and massage; a social club for dances and parties; and a camera club with nude models in exclusive photo sessions and confidential photo-developing services.

Despite all the attractions, membership continued to decline. In 1974, the twentieth anniversary, only one other original member remained (Ken, also from Sunglades). Although new members continued to drop by, not enough stayed to keep the club going. In 1982 Ruehle put Sun Valley up for sale. When no satisfactory offers came in, he converted the camp into a conventional RV park.

COMMENTS:

Submitted by Kathryn Joselin:

I was a member of Sun Valley Garden from 1957 ( the year I was born) to 1968. Us kids would go laughing off into the bush or path ways playing games of tag, spooking each other or hunting for “who took the marshmallows”. At many of these camp fires someone would bring out there guitars at add a little music to the gathering. Karl would join these gatherings as well and bring out his accordion. Others had accordions too and they would all entertain us with music and songs. Karl may have been a little gruff but he cared. He built us kid a wooden castle that was in the middle of the sand box. It was big enough to sit inside and pretend to hide from the raging dragons that we knew for sure were lurking beyond the kiddy pool. The “Valley” was the central place many gathered. It held the snack bar, the old style pop machine, the pool, ping pong tables, sun benches, and volley ball court. How often I heard the clanging of the bell for a game of volley ball and watched as out of the surrounding trees, pool and bushes people would happily emerge for a challenging game. Ahhhhhh how the happy memories are flooding back. Sitting on our little porch spitting out cherry pits from a basket of cherries mom had bought from a local grower. The challenge of trying to find where the boys had built there new “no girls allowed” fort. Picking wild strawberries and trying to find four leaf clovers. Rainy days of playing board games or cards with family members. Learning to swim in the pool and playing on the big black inner tube. Learning to dive and searching for the camp cats new litter of kits. Bicycling along the various paths that meandered there way through the entire camp and grabbing a snack at the snack bar. Play in the “pig pen” . This was an area of clay that you could cover yourself in and let dry. It was suppose to be good for the skin but for us kids it was just fun mucking and later watching the drying clay crack on your skin. No going into the pool after that. Karl had built an outside shower to clean yourself off with. For me the cottage represents and idyllic time in my life full of peaceful family times peppered with adventures in imagination. No Tv’s, no computers, no game boys, no VCR, and no Nintendos. Karl kept us kid busy too with planning costume days, fireworks, and occasional dances. For the members this was a place to relax, meet new and old friends and just enjoy nature. However for Karl and his family it was a business. He was forever working or doing something. The “valley” need to be mowed, garbage around the camp needed to be collected, supplies for the camp and the snack bar needed to be tended to, book keeping needed to be done as well as news letters to be sent, pool needed scrubbing, roads ways needed to be maintained as well the the water network through out the camp. His wife and children were Karl’s helpers with running the snack bar, tending to the huge garden, collecting garbage and various other chores. As far as I remember Karl never hired anyone else to help with maintaining and running the camp. As membership dropped off Karl tried to sell the cottage but there were no takers. He tried several other ideas until finally he closed the camp. No longer with his wife and his children all grown and all over the world Karl could not keep up “the cottage” like in the old days. A single man with way too much to maintain Karl concentrated on what he could do and maintained the homestead and major entrance way. I had an opportunity to visit “the cottage” in 1996. My husband and my daughter had never been there. I was greeted with a large smile and much to my surprise Karl’s two sons. They had come for a visit and were lending their Dad a helping hand. I found the camp to be in much the same shape as the pictures you have on your web site. Everything was over grown, in need of repair, falling down, or neglected. My old a-frame cottage was still standing but looked a little unsteady. It is a shame that you only have pictures of Sun Valley Gardens years after it was closed because as I walked around “the cottage” I was walking not among ruins and neglect but with my heart. I saw beyond what your pictures tragically show. I saw the tower at the volley ball court I was allowed to climb and help keep score. I saw the frog pond by the pool we always new would hold a frog or two. I saw the cottages of friends we looked forward to seeing every year. I saw and I saw so much more than your picture show. Sun Valley Garden played an important part in opening up the idea of nudist colonies. Karl had a vision and was one of the lucky one to make his vision a reality. Though he did rule his camp he was not a tyrant. He had a vision of what his camp should be like and ran it according to that vision. A place………………..no…………… a valley in Gods garden under the sun.

Submitted by Jason Beckwith from Oceanside, CA:

I remember going there as a very young kid in the 70’s!
My dad, Robert Beckwith, was a Niagara Falls, NY cop for 30 years, and my family had a trailer there year round.
Most of the time we spent there was in the summer and on the weekends, of course… but I do remember running from the clubhouse jacuzzi to the pool, jump in the pool (middle of the night in Canada=coooold!) and run back and jump in the jacuzzi!
If you were REALLY brave, you sat in the SNOW then jumped back in the jacuzzi!
I remember every 4th of July my dad would do the bonfire and they would roast a pig on a spit over our firepit..a full-sized pig!!
Usually, 4th of July also included an auction, and I remember getting up in front of the crowd at some talent thing before the bonfire… and singing Bad Bad Leroy Brown, acapella and nothin’ but a smile on!!
I saw a photo somewhere on the site of a little boy statue/fountain.. Karl had a stable and horse ring, and he let my dad keep the horse there.
I read about Karl’s ‘stern’ manner, and I laugh…. Was he gruff? You bet!
